“Why are you doing that?”
Early in the day the girls came up to me as I was photographing the details of their parents wedding day and asked this question.
“Because one day when you get older you get to look back on these photos and see what real love looks like. You get to decide that you want that on your own wedding day. You get to see how much your dad loves your mom. You get to see what love really is.”
Because that is what it is all about.
A breeze came through the pines as her brother sang along to his guitar. We waited. It was bright and warm, the city stretching out below us. Scott paced back and fourth in the shade. The day was finally here. The day that everything else had been leading him to. Life had made so many stops and detours but they all came to today. Today he was right where he should be.
His boutonnière was just right. His outfit all set. And he was surrounded by those that love and have cheered for him every step of the way. And any moment she would be here. The woman that was made just for him. His other half. The reason he gets up each morning. Today she was going to become his wife.
Finally, the time came. Everyone made their way down the hill to the cliff. Waiting for them was a scene so perfect it could be a painting. And as she made her way down towards all of her family and friends the only person she saw was her one love.
The girls came down first. Both making their way down to their dad where he met them with a kiss. Today was the day they officially became sisters. And their princess flower crowns sat perfectly on their heads.
And then, as Scott stood up from greeting his girls – he saw her.
Jennifer was there, ready to say forever. Ready for anything and everything. In that moment, a tear escaped his eye as he gently brushed it away. Never once, taking his eyes off of her. This was it. This was the beginning of forever.
At first glance these images tell the story of Scott and Jennifer’s wedding day. But knowing the couple, it is easy to see they show so much more. They are the beginning of a marriage. Because these two weren’t planning just a wedding. They were planning a marriage. They bet on forever, and they bet on each other. All in.
They knew that what they were doing that day was so much bigger than themselves. They were laying the foundation for their girls. Showing them what a real love story looks like. Teaching them what it really means to find your one and only.
Jennifer and Scott. I don’t know how to put into words how thankful I am to you for bringing me in to witness your love. You are the reason I do this. Your love story is true, and selfless and beautiful in ways so many can only dream of. I can’t wait to see it grow and thrive in your family. I can’t wait to see your daughters bloom into amazing young women because of your love.
My only request to you is that you never forget what it feels like. Never forget that moment when you saw your forever in each other.
And make sure it’s always, always “You and me babe.”
Huge thank you to everyone who helped to make this day so perfect!
